UTTARAKHAND

  • In Uttarakhand’s poll history, only 5% candidates have been women although state’s 50% population is female

Women from Uttarakhand, who have been at the forefront of almost every mass movement in the state, including the famous ‘Chipko Andolan’ of the 1970s and the anti-alcohol movement in the hills, have had a minuscule representation in Parliament with only three women from the state making it to the Lok Sabha in the past seven decades.

Since the first general elections of 1951-52, a total of 810 candidates have contested for the five seats of the region that later became Uttarakhand. Of these, only 43 were women while 757 were men. This makes the percentage of women contesting the polls just around 5% while 95% of the candidates were men.

Around 49% of the state’s population is female (as per the 2011 census), and there are 37.11 lakh women voters in the state out of a total of 77.65 lakh voters (according to latest figures issued by the state election commission), the ratio of women representation in the general elections is abysmal.
