  • Uttarakhand’s state bird monal to be conserved with help from Himachal
  • In a bid to safeguard the numbers of the state bird of Uttarakhand, Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus Impejanus), the forest department has procured two male monals from Nehru Pheasantry at Manali in Himachal Pradesh. The birds will be used for conservation and breeding at the GB Pant High Altitude Zoo in Nainital. The move was taken after Central Zoo Authority (CZA) gave clearance to both the states to exchange the wild birds for ex-situ conservation.

  • Himalayan Monal which features in the ‘red’ category of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list, is facing a threat due to rampant degradation and disturbance of its habitat. In Uttarakhand, the birds are currently found in grassy slopes above the treeline, primarily in Chopta, Munsyari, Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Pindari and Dodital area of Uttarkashi.

  • The Himalayan Monal is kept under schedule one of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Hence, it requires much attention and care to safeguard it.
