Forest department to develop country’s first moss garden in Nainital

State forest department is planning to develop country’s first moss garden in Lingadhar near Sariyataal nursery in the Nainital range.

According to the officials of forest department, the garden will have 21 species of mosses (both natural and transplanted).

The other factors due to which Nainital was chosen for the mass garden include —low pollution level and optimal temperature required for the survival of the various species.
The species to be developed at the garden include Funaria hygrometria, Brynum capillare, and Brynum orgentum, among many others.

Mosses are not only important in monitoring the health of ecosystems but certain varieties are also used to generate electricity. Some varieties can be used to see early warning signs of environmental change and help reduce soil erosion too.

The forest department aims that the study of various species of mosses will help the scientists ascertain their characteristics. This information will come handy in research to develop fuel, medicines, and agricultural necessities.
